Millennia
ago this rock stood at the center of the meeting grounds for
Indians from all directions for several hundred miles. The two
bowls carved into the top of the rock sit side by side, facing
the ocean, hinting at long lost conversations shared by Indian
women, looking out over the ocean, while grinding corn a thousand
years ago. Conversations long forgotten by all save the rock.
The entire valley is littered with
ancient shards of pottery and tools, many of them embedded into
the walls of more recent structures.
|
The
local Indians say that these grounds are one of three sacred
energy vortexes to be found in the valley, and anyone viewing
the life-force that gives rise to so much beauty would be hard
pressed to find a better explanation for the intensity of the
colors and the birds and the grass.
Visitors to Los Naranjos see beyond
the beauty of the garden to share in the vision that has restored
these sacred grounds to their present condition. It is immediately
apparent that someone loves this land, and is pouring time,
money and love into the manifestation of this vision.

Jarrett,
who is co-owner and resident manager of the retreat center is
a professional musician and artist. His influence is felt in the
overall impression of the gardens, and in the little touches like
the gold fish ponds (right) and the statues (above)
- some prominently displayed, others tucked away, waiting to be
discovered during a quiet moment of reflection. |
Los
Naranjos boasts its own waterfall and private swimming hole
shown below left. This pool, the smaller of two, is carved into
the side of the mountain high above the retreat center. The
water is cool, and deep, and perfect for dipping into for a
refreshing swim, or floating upon while the world passes by
below on the banks of the river.
