Charles regularly offers workshops at conferences and for yoga studios in Texas and through out the USA and abroad. He teaches on a wide range of topics including: Breathing, Posture, Concentration, Balance, Stress Management, Peak Performance, and Visualization.
He is a regular presenter at the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and the National Wellness Conference. He has twice been the Key Note Speaker at Seton Hospitals Cardiac Rehabilitation Conference. Graduates of his teacher training school now teach yoga in 45 states and 15 countries.
Charles is a gifted generalist, accomplished story teller and public speaker. His workshops are highly experiential, and life changing. He has been developing and refining these topics over the last 30 years.

This workshop will give you the opportunity to assess your breathing habits, and then work to improve your breathing and thus improve your overall physical, mental and emotional health. Breathing is the foundation upon which all else rests. Any improvement in your breath will improve all aspects of your life. Integrating Breath Into Asana Practice

Panayama is the yogic practice of breath control. In this workshop, we will first learn and practice a variety of breathing patterns and then explore ways to integrate these breathing patterns into our asana practice. When we move as deep into a pose as we can the breath is sacrificed. Overtime we develop poor breathing habits in these poses. Learn how to use all 8 areas of your lungs in different combinations to support your breath. Then explore how to emphasize different combinations to breath in each different pose, and during transitions. Learn how to use breath to help relax muscles during a stretch, how to improve balance, eliminate frustration with challenging poses, improve stamina, and elevate your physical asana practice to the level of moving meditation. When you experience the difference that a breath centered practice makes you will never want to go back.

Fascia is part of the connective tissue that holds the body together. For many years it has been dismissed and neglected and nothing more than this. Then pioneers like Ida Rolf, Judith Aston, Emilie Conrad, and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen recognized fascia’s true significance and complexity. This revolution in understanding of fascia spread through the massage community and is now beginning to revolutionize the world of Yoga. A solid understanding of fascia is critical to anyone who works with the body. This workshop will explore the latest scientific understanding of fascia, both anatomy and physiology, and how to make better use of this understanding in how we diagnose and treat a host of ailments, including balance problems in the elderly, tendonitis, bursitis, and hosts of other problems.

Lucid Yoga Nidra
This is a combination of two of Charles’ most popular workshops, Lucid Yoga & Yoga Nidra. Some of Charles’ students refer to Lucid Yoga as “Spacey Floaty Yoga”. Learn how to slow down your brainwaves resulting in effortless attention, sensory distortions and experience the plasticity of time itself. From this altered state of consciousness, we will enter our Yoga Nidra practice. Yoga Nidra is often called ‘yogic sleep’, and for centuries, Yogis who practiced it found that on hour of yoga nidra could replace 4 hours of regular sleep. In the deepest state of relaxation, we will plant our Sankalpa (positive affirmation), before slowly returning to wakefulness. (40% Asana, 40% Yoga Nidra, 20% Theory)
Improving Concentration
Dharana is the 6th limb of Yoga and teaches the student to bring their mind to one-pointed-attention. The ability to concentrate the mind is probably the most important skill you ever learn. As your concentration improves, so will your yoga improve. But greater concentration will also enhance your performance at work, at play, and improves communication skills and intimacy. A large part of this workshop is about learning to eliminate boredom and anxiety from your life in order to enhance performance. This workshop is a combination of lecture, discussion interspersed with fun experiential activities to deepen our understanding and appreciation for the principles discussed. (50% Theory, 30% Experiential, 20% Discussion)
Exploring the Bandhas in Asana Practice
In Sanskrit, Bandha means arrest, lock, or tighten. The 4 Bandhas involve isolating and tightening different areas of the body. I was introduced to the bandhas by my first yoga teacher when I was 11. Back then (1970’s) they were taught as stand-alone practices in support of advanced pranayama (breathing) and practiced vigorously. More recently I discovered that the Bandhas can be engaged delicately as a meditation target, engaged lightly to improve posture, improving health of the sacrum, lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine. It can be engaged moderately to support most asana poses like chair, triangle, and downward facing dog, engaged strongly to protect the spine from injury in strong back bends, and engaged and released rhythmically to increase circulation in the pelvic floor. Women have long been informed of the importance of exercising the pelvic floor, but men can also benefit from this, especially in the health of the prostate gland. Recent evidence shows that proper understanding and practice of the Bhandas can help prevent senility as we age. Note, bandhas should not be practiced while pregnant. (95% Asana, 5% Theory).

Using Body Maps in the Brain Friday 5:30-8:30pm
In the 1930’s Wilder Penfield discovered that the brain has two maps of the body, one in the motor Cortex and one in the Sensory cortex. These two maps organize our sense of our physical self, and interact with each other to help us control our bodies. This understanding led to improved therapies for a multitude of injuries and illnesses, including phantom limb pain. 60 years later, just in the last 10 years, researchers are shocked to discover that there are not two, but probably dozens of body maps in the brain. Many conditions that we are used to thinking of arising from a physical condition, may in fact be faulty maps in the brain. If that is the case, then how we understand and treat the problems will be radically transformed when we employ this new paradigm of body maps when working with our students. The good news is that body maps in the brain have been shown to be very maleable, often remapping themselves in days, hours, or even minutes.
Lucid Yoga Saturday 9:00am-12pm
We will start with 1/2 hour warming up the body with sun-salutations and standing poses. Then we will slow the yoga down to the point that students feel the body pulling their attention deeper, ever deeper into a world of subtle sensations and pleasure. Learn how to use physical exercise and breath control to slow the mind down from beta frequencies (associated with muscle tension and worrying) down into Alpha and Theta frequencies (associated with physical relaxation, creativity, and a profound sense of well being). Learn to practice Hatha Yoga as a form of meditation and experience the amazing stillness and timeless quality of mind that comes from Lucid Yoga.
Practicing Non-Attachment in Asana & Life Saturday 1:30-4:30pm
In this workshop we see how integrating a little yoga philosophy into an asana practice can improve our practice not only spiritually, but also at a physical level too. Yoga is built on the foundation of the five Yamas or moral precepts. The secret to three of these practices, Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-hoarding) is the idea of non-attachment. We will first discuss these principles in theory and then express them through our physical yoga practice. In closing we will see how we can apply non-attachment to improve other areas of our lives.
Yoga & Writing Sunday 9:00am-12:00pm
(Asana Class) Hatha Yoga, Pranayama and Meditation are amazing tools for shifting consciousness. Learn how to combine yoga with creative writing to tap into deeper sources of inspiration. We begin with an Asana class to shut down internal dialogue and distance students from the momentum of their daily routines. Then we move into pranayama and meditation to still the mind and deepen our sense of self. Following a writing prompt, to set the mind in motion again, we write for 20-60 minutes and then form into small groups where anyone who wishes to read to the group will have an opportunity to do so. The reader can ask for feedback from the group, but only positive feedback.

Body Maps & Yoga Nidra: Body mapping is a type of therapy applied to many physical conditions attributed to a “faulty map” in the brain.
Bodies, like water, take the path of least resistance. With repetitive use, our bodies do the same thing. We tend to cheat in our movements, not completely doing full range of motion, just the optimal amount of moving to get the task done.
Given enough time and repeating, the brain will take the information that the body has been giving it, and store it as truth. If the body has trained itself to do an activity with 30% energy output and range, the brain will completely believe that this is normal for this body part. Anything more, the brain theorizes, and injury will occur, so it protects the body by only allowing the movements it believes are the correct ones.
This repetitive movement “maps” for the brain exactly how the body says it needs to move, or more importantly how it believes it can move. This can cause a structural dysfunction due to lack of full range of motion over a period of time, which has “mis-mapped” the brain.
During this session you’ll gain a new understanding of how we can radically transform physical conditions by re-mapping the mind.
This workshop (and the weekend) will conclude with a session on Yoga Nidra or “Yogic Sleep” a type of lucid sleeping which is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness, with a special focus on creating an appropriate Sankalpa (affirmation).
